Overdraft Coverage

    Bank Independent offers overdraft options with any checking account, helping you avoid unintentional inconveniences and fees.

    Standard Overdraft Coverage*

    All new consumer checking accounts come with complimentary $100 overdraft protection. After 60 days, your protection increases to $750 if your account is in good standing. Standard Overdraft Protection will help you avoid denied transactions, but according to federal regulations, you must tell us that you want it, or "opt in" for coverage for ATM and debit card transactions.

    How to Request Overdraft Coverage for Everyday Debit Card Purchases and ATM Withdrawals:

    • Click here to complete the form;
    • Call us at (256) 386-5000 or (877) 865-5050; or
    • Stop by any of our convenient branch locations.

    Act now to avoid future inconvenience! Unless you opt-in, you have NO overdraft coverage on ATM withdrawals and everyday debit card purchases.*

    Overdraft Fee Forgiveness**

    We all make mistakes. For $36 a year*** we’ll forgive up to three of yours each calendar year and save you up to $108 in NSF fees.  Visit a Personal Banker to enroll, or call Customer Service at (256) 386-5000 or (877) 865-5050.

    $5 Daily Overdraft Safety Net

    We want to keep a small overdraft from leading to a big charge. We won’t charge you NSF fees when you end the day with an overdrawn balance of $5 or less.  No special enrollment is required, and all Bank Independent checking accounts are eligible.

    Other Overdraft Options

    Bank Independent offers additional overdraft protection plans, including an Overdraft Line of Credit and the option of drawing funds from another Bank Independent account to cover a negative balance.

    For more information on available overdraft options, stop by any sales office or call Customer Service at (256) 386-5000 or (877) 865-5050 Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. We will be pleased to assist you in any way possible.

    *We will charge an NSF of $36 each time we pay an overdraft. Standard overdraft practices apply when authorization has been made to pay overdrafts for the following transactions: Checks and other transactions made using your checking account number or automatic bill payments. Whether your overdrafts will be paid is discretionary and we reserve the right not to pay. For example, we typically do not pay overdrafts if your account is not in good standing, or you are not making regular deposits, or you have too many overdrafts. We will not authorize and pay overdrafts for ATM transactions or everyday debit card transactions unless you ask us to. Deposits are required within 60 days of an overdraft. If an overdraft is not paid in full within this period your account is subject to close. See a Personal Banker for details on minimum balance requirements and monthly maintenance fees for all deposit accounts.

    **Requires separate enrollment for non-Premier accounts. Different enrollment fee may apply during the first calendar you are enrolled in the program. See program disclosure for additional details. A fee of $36 will be charged for each overdraft that exceeds the number refunded in any given calendar year that you are enrolled in the program. The refund of the Overdraft fee will typically be posted to your account no later than the next business day after the fee has posted to your account. If fewer overdrafts occur during each calendar year, only the number of overdraft fees posted to the account will be refunded. A refund of an overdraft fee does not indicate nor guarantee that the overdraft item will be paid and/or not returned to the presenter. Bank Independent reserves the right to terminate this program at any time, effective at the expiration of any calendar year.

    ***Overdraft Fee Forgiveness is complimentary with Premier Checking

    †An NSF fee will not be charged to an account if the ending daily balance in the account is overdrawn by $5.00 or less.
